I grew up in a house where birthdays were an event.
Every year brought cake and balloons. Streamers across the doorway. Banners taped carefully to the wall. Presents wrapped so prettily they felt like part of the decorations. I handed out invitations at school and counted down the days. On the morning of my party, I put on a dress with frilly socks and waited near the window for my friends to arrive.
Before my party began, there was always a moment when the room felt transformed. The cake stood tall at the center of the table, usually pink and white buttercream smoothed into soft swirls and piped edges, finished and waiting. In the crystal bowl, the lime green sherbet looked fluffy and creamy, and I could hardly wait to taste that sweet, tangy drink.
Crepe streamers in pastel colors draped from the doorway and brushed against the walls. Presents were stacked on a nearby table, ribbons curled and bows fixed in place. I walked back and forth across the floor just to hear my black patent leather shoes tap. My mother would tell me to twirl, and I would spin so my dress lifted and whirled around me.
Everything was ready. I just had to wait for the doorbell to ring....
But back to sherbet punch. Talk about a blast from the past. One of my clearest memories is that popular party drink.
In the 1980s, especially in the South, sherbet punch showed up at almost every party. My mom would buy orange and green sherbet and scoop it into a large crystal bowl. She poured ginger ale over the top and let it foam and swirl into soft pastel clouds. My siblings and I would watch, fascinated at the pretty little science experiment.
The bowl mattered.
It was heavy crystal and only came out for holidays or company. Seeing it on the table made everything feel official. That bowl reinforced the fact that my birthday was a special day indeed. Â
When my sons were younger, I tried to create that same sense of anticipation for them. Year after year, until they outgrew themed decorations and party favors. The point was never extravagance. It was the effort. It was setting the day apart.
Our Buttercream Dreams Birthday Card Collection grew from those memories.
As adults, we still get to mark birthdays. We still get to choose something pretty. We still get to send a card that feels thoughtful and lasting.
